Former Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Tofig Zulfugarov said the Shusha Declaration signed by Azerbaijan and Turkey had lifted bilateral relations to a new high, Trend reported.

Zulfugarov stressed that the approval of the Azerbaijani parliament sends a message to the people of Azerbaijan and Turkey, as well as to the international community.

“Shusha’s statement demonstrates that the Azerbaijani-Turkish union will play an active role in the region,” Zulfugarov said.

Meanwhile, Turkish researcher Gokmen Kilicoglu said relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey peaked during the 44-day Karabakh war, according to Trend.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said the Shusha Declaration on Allied Relations signed with Turkey on June 15 is of strategic importance for Eurasia and promotes peace and security in the South Caucasus region.

Describing Shusha’s declaration as a triumph of new geopolitical realities, Aliyev said the historic document ratifies the ally status of the ties of friendship, brotherhood and partnership between Azerbaijan and Turkey.
