Live updates: Rishi Sunak says ‘standards are worth fighting for’

The UK opposition leader has called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign following the resignation of two Cabinet ministers, saying “the government is falling apart”.

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labor party, slammed outgoing ministers Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid for backing Johnson in the first place, noting they had ‘knew who this prime minister is from the start’.

“After all the mess and scandals and failure, it’s clear this government is falling apart,” Starmer said, adding that Sunak and Javid had been “his cheerleaders throughout this sad story”.

“The British public will not be fooled. The Conservative Party is corrupt and changing one man will not fix that. Only a real change of government can give Britain the fresh start it needs,” he said.

Other British opposition parties joined the call for Prime Minister Ian Blackford, leader of the SNP Westminster, to resign, saying it was “the end of Boris Johnson”.

“Tory MPs should have gotten rid of him months ago – and that says a lot, they are now only acting out of self-interest and fear losing their seats in the next election,” he said.

Tim Farron of the Liberal Democrats tweeted: “This toxic dishonesty has been going on for months now. So I don’t feel *all* so generous to the people who finally turned on the Prime Minister after tolerating this for so long, providing cover for him, disastrously undermining decency in high office.
