The wait is over and the UEFA Champions League is finally back. Borussia Dortmund have traveled to the Turkish capital for their first group stage meeting against Besiktas JK. The Turkish champions led by Sergen Yalcin made their return to Europe’s biggest club competition. And on Wednesday, they had the difficult task of facing the favorites to win the group: The Blacks and the Yellows.
Marco Rose had a solid start to his tenure at Borussia Dortmund, leading the team to the German Cup second round and keeping them in the top positions in the Bundesliga. After a spectacular victory on Saturday against Bayer Leverkusen, his attention turned to his Champions League debut with Dortmund.
High intensity, fast paced football was the theme of the night from the first whistle. The home side, driven by their fierce and passionate supporters, went straight to Borussia Dortmund’s goal in the opening minutes. Gregor Kobel was tested by Michy Batshuayi after the latter rounded Mats Hummels and saved his powerful shot.
Borussia Dortmund were also looking to go on the offensive in a counterattack, with a strong bond between Marco Reus, Raphael Guerriero and Donyell Malen on the left side of the park.
Twenty minutes into the game, Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for Borussia Dortmund after making his way through the right side of the Besiktas defense and firing the shot past the Besiktas keeper.
The goal gave Borussia Dortmund some breathing space and the confidence to continue and dominate the proceedings. Marco Reus and Erling Haaland both missed golden opportunities to double BVB’s lead.
But just before the end of the first half, Jude Bellingham took Besiktas defenders for a spin before setting up Erling Haaland who was not to be turned down this time around. The goal, Haaland’s 21st in the competition in just a 17th appearance, gave Borussia Dortmund a 2-0 lead before the break.

The second half of the game saw both teams try to move back and forth to put the ball in the net. Borussia Dortmund created a lot of opportunities which were wasted. Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Marco Reus and Thomas Meunier all came close to scoring, before Ansgar Knauff hit the woodwork at close range.
The clinical finish was lacking for Borussia Dortmund’s offensive opportunities, even though they managed to take very good positions.
Besiktas made sure to scare BVB in the closing minutes of the game after Francisco Montero finally brought home fans a smile as he passed Gregor Kobel on a set piece. But despite their best efforts, the clock was not on their side. The Group C opener ended in a 1-2 victory for Borussia Dortmund. And overall, it was a well-deserved victory.
